This was a passage done in October 2007 . On my new 382 Diesel Duck ,just after delivery to me . I spent a little time preparing for the passage . Going was in the winter monsoon .And the weather was a little unfiendly . 25 plus knots on the beam und driving through the trough of 12' seas . Withe the paravanes I was able to do this. My crew a local fellow from Hong Kong made the trip with no problems . We did take the sails in because of the increasing beam wind .Feeling it might over power us casing a broach . Prudence learned from years of sailing . And not wanting to have to shorten sail after dark . I cruised in the Philippines four months ,all to short . Since I had taken on a 3/4 load of fuel there was plenty for the return trip ,and I am still running on that load . The boat takes 1.5 gal/hr doing 6.5 knts . I will add the prop was changed to give it more drive and put me on the speed curve that the designer worked out(warantee) . Retuning the weather was worse .For three days we had 38 knts on the beam with 15'seas . Again I was able to do this because of the para vanes . This weather lasted for 3days before abating. The Iveco engine now has 500plus hrs and no questions ...Thank you
Hi George ; I don't have the prop dimentions with me . Bill K can answer that . The blade area was 50 % more . That gives it the drive to maintain it's speed . We are now doing what you claim it should do . We are way down on the RPM's ,and the heat is not a factor according to my pyrometer. ...Regards Brian
Will you please describe the prop experience a bit more? What size/pitch was on originally and what did you replace it with? What reduction gear do you have and what RPM do you cruise? Hope this isn't to much trouble but I think it would interest many. I know that just small changes in a prop can make very noticable changes to the boat.
