Some Freezer Tricks We Learned While Sailing On 4621.1) Freeze about 3 quarts of strong salt water, it will take several days, and place it opposite the freezer plates. Acts as a "cold battery" and stabilizes internal temperatures.
2) Place a 2" closed cell foam blanket over the frozen food. Should have good contact with the freezer box sides.
3) Drinks, beer, etc can be placed on top of the blanket and won't freeze for a couple of days.
4) A foam cushion, or even folded blankets, clothes, etc., placed on top of the freezer helps to restrict downward heat flow through the top and around the door.
5) Using a temperature gun check around the outside of the freezer for low temperature areas that may mean thin or no foam insulation. Checking the side next to the hull and the bottom can be done by checking for warm areas on the outboard inside of the freezer box.
6) Make sure there is good air flow around the compressor heat exchanger (sometimes folks accidently put clothes or things in the compressor cabinet) and that the exchanger is dust and dirt free.
7) (Added by Randal, 4625) Adding a square baffle, can be taped cardboard, on the condenser (looks like a small radiator) helps divert hot air away so new air blowing through the condenser is cooler. Randal says this resulted in the unit running less.
