| I noticed the pilothouse door handle was making a screeching noise and disassembled it this morning to have a look. Although the handle itself is stainless steel, the spring is steel. There is a spring on the outside handle and one on the inside handle and both contribute to returning the handle to the horizontal position. Both springs were rusted and the inside spring had broken. I filled both areas with grease and put them back together. I did the same thing to the identical handle on the cockpit door. This reinforces my idea that everything on the boat that moves should be packed with grease including the door latches, hatch hinges which I added grease fittings to. I also disassembled the hatch latches and greased them. The handles are very easy to disassemble. Remove two inside screws and gently slip the inside and outside apart. Grease accomplishes two things. It lubricates the movement and keeps saltwater or saltwater air from infiltrating the space and corroding the components. My next boat will be constructed of pure gold. You have my word on that. |
