Hello Everyone

Ruth and I arrived at the mouth of the Santubong River near Kuching on the island of Borneo at 3:00 PM on June 29th after an 82 hour passage from Kuala Terengganu on the East side of the Malay Peninsula. On the second day of our passage as we relaxed on the flybridge the engine exhaust started making a different noise. I ran to the railing and there was no water coming from the exhaust. I pulled the throttle back and took the transmission out of gear and made my way hastily to the engine room.
What I saw is what you never want to see when you open the ER door, a 2 inch hose gushing water onto the ER floor. The hose that connects the saltwater pump to the exhaust to cool it had simply slid off it's connection. Within a few minutes I had it reconnected but while I was standing there dripping in salt water I checked more hose clamps and they were all loose. The bigger the hose the looser the clamp. Some I could make two turns of the screw. Now I know these were tight when I left the yard but apparently after two years and 1,000 engine hours the hoses have shrunk and the clamps need to be retightened.
This morning I went over all the clamps in the ER to assure they were tight and everyone I have tried to tighten I could. So get out those screwdrivers and see if yours need tightening as well. There is probably a standard somewhere that says hose clamps need attention every so often but I just never looked I suppose.

I've been paying attention to that area because it has multiple short hoses and size adapters with only 1 clamp. Not a great combination. I think within 2' there are 2 size changes, 2 couplers with ts and 6 single clamps.

I may see if I can change the set-up so dual clamps are used. It is pretty easy, and not uncommon, for a single clamp to fail.

Thanks for the post Bill and Randal.
