"Earlier this year we had our liferaft serviced by PAM, Marmaris, Turkey. Here is a picture of it. This commercial raft was purchased from Seahorse when we left China, October 2003. The surveyor was quite impressed and told us that it is of very high quality. I had the opportunity to check it against a "pleasure craft" model next to it and there is no comparison.

Does this liferaft meet USCG standards and how much does it weigh, cost?

Jerie

The good news: The six person Solas approved life-raft exceeds USCG requirements and the price is about $1500.

The bad news: It is very heavy, about 80 kilos, and not easy to ship because of the compressed air bottle. However, it can be delivered on any boat we ship and trucked to you.

These Chinese rafts are very good...anything that meets solas requirements will do the job....But they are quite big....all pervious Ducks have sailed away with 6 man valise rafts which are OK but if you think about it they have to live inside or in a deck locker...all a terrible waste of space...no matter how big your boat, is it will never be big enough when it comes to storage so why stick a raft in a precious loker for the next 10 years.

Go with any of the ISAF approved self righting rafts for yachting rather than SOLAS...more compact...and get it in the fibreglass canister and mount it securely outside somewhere on deck (with a hydrostatic release) like all the other people in the world...you will not regret it.

Lifetime sailing including 1990 BOC Singlehanded Around World Race...many Antarctic sailing expeditions....lived together alone in a box in Antarctica for a year.
