Hello all!

Any homebuilders out there? I've seen Wendell's excellent site, and I'd love to see other's in the process of building a Duck.

I'm very interested in building a wooden Duck - I look at the following websites often for inspiration:

http://dieselducks.com/Jerrys%2038Duck-2.html
and
http://dieselducks.com/Wood-constructionphotos.html

Any other wooden Ducks being built out there?

thanks - Love the site!

Hello Mel
I am doing a steel swan 55. Completed lofting, patterns, frames, bulkheads, transom, stems, rudder and keel.Currently installing keel cooling on keel.Next attach stems and then "finally" erect frames.About 2 years into it working part time.Maybe 800 hrs so far.It is going slower than I thought but having fun, developing skills and feeding the dream. Sorry I don't have a web site but have posted a couple pics in BB2.
Best wishes Brian in BC interior.

I saw Fred Hammond build a 48 foot Wooden duck.
Unfortunately it had an engine room fire in the Tenn-Tom most likely due to insufficient heat shielding around the engine and exhaust.
Havign suffered a similar engine room near fire while transiting the Welland Canal I now realize the biggest hazard may be radiant heat not necesarily an open flame.

In my case the fire got started next to the water jacketed and cooled engine manifold on a small Volvo Penta 25 HP diesel in a Hughes 37 sailboat. Hardly what you would consider a prime candidate for a fire source.
It is absolutely critical you install plenty of polished/reflective heat shields along the whole lenght of all exhaust piping in a wooden Duck. Doesn't matter if it is wet or dry exhaust.

Hi Mel

I'm hopefully starting a wooden 452 in May. I'm in the process of finding a place to build in the UK (I'm in Mauritius til May) then will start once I move back.

I've found a place where a guy built a George designed Archimedes schooner and am hoping to be based there. Once work starts I will probably be a regular here Wink

I intend to run a site and keep it updated with the progress and hope if you decide to build you will do the same as, like you I guess, I would appreciate having as much info as possible during the build.

All the best.
