Dennis,
The engine room does not have any built in space for spares but modification for storage would not be difficult. Though pictures do indeed make it appear that there is not as much storage on the boat as would be ideal (it looked that way to me too), that is not the case. The lockers behind the settee are very large and deep and would be ideal for LIFO (last in first out) type storage, which is good for bulk food storage. There are also a few LARGE lockers and numerous cabinets, drawers and cubby holes. The engine room would benefit from a tool storage or parts storage bin. But it would not be hard to add after the fact either. All in all there is a fair amount of storage space. Hugh |

I have been a bit concerned about storage for tools, filters, and spares since the beginning. Food is not so much of a concern as there are a number of bins available, but engine room storage is very limited.
One needs to design some storage racks/bins or WHU in the engine room, not to mention a nice big red toolbox. Simply lashing down some small plastic milk crates will not do for me. In any case the ER space is very limited and the water tank sucks up valuable room. I would be very happy if Bill and George could improve on this aspect of the design. I have no idea how, but perhaps a smaller DC genset, on demand hot water heater, and relocate both the RO system and fresh water tanks. Please don't get me wrong, I love the boat, but just really need more mechanical room. |

I've been back on George Beuhler's website and the alternate plan he shows on http://www.dieselducks.com/Duck462study1.html with only one head forward and the galley in the forward cabin looks like it puts the water tank and more storage in the passageway, freeing up some space in the engine room.
I really like this plan for a couple cruising. Occasional guests can sleep on the dinette. |

there is room in the ER to build a rack behind the reefer box over the top of the shaft which could hold new oil, old oil, coolant and product water (for flushing / pickling the watermaker)

On hull # 1 the owner kept the engine spares in drawers under the aft cabin bed. The surface of the water tank in the engine room is large enough for a tool box and vice, with enough left for storage. I would think that space under the floor hatches could be used for spares as well.
I was impressed with the amount of overall storage space on the boat but like one's home, if you're a hunter gatherer there is never enough storage. Ruth and I are having to deal with a life time of accumulating in our attempts to empty the house. We've invited family over to take what they want but as of yet they don't want much. It’s surprising what you can live without. |

Bill is always striving to improve his product, and perhaps he will build some storage into the engine room.

There are three large plastic storage crates nested above the water heater for spares. They are secured with shock cord hooks. Additional storage boxes can be installed on the work bench if desired. Also the new exhaust system we are installing means the space where the engine water lift muffler was can now be used for a tool and/or spares chest. But it should be removable to allow access to the PSS shaft seal. |

The 462 is a big boat with a lot of space....everything is relative ...if you come from a sailing boat you dribble at the size of the engine room....you know the story ....give a guy a bigger garage/shed and he will still fill it with stuff....
The standard boat will have to be organised by the owner which is a big job but the room is there......we have a matching RED tool box for our RED boat....secured in the engine room and truck loads of space around the boat to carry everything....but you do need a plan....especially for good/old oil etc etc... When I had my 29ft yacht I wanted a bigger one....when I had my 50ft yacht I wanted a bigger one....when I had my 60ft yacht I wanted a bigger one...till I got to 120ft ...then I wanted a 462...yipee! Lifetime sailing including 1990 BOC Singlehanded Around World Race...many Antarctic sailing expeditions....lived together alone in a box in Antarctica for a year. |
