Engine IVECO vs Others

Because the JD engine, 6cylinder, doesn't meet tier II (without going electronic) Bill has recomended a swithc to IVECO NA 6 cylinder. After some research this seems to be a good option. A NA 6 mechanical governor is about as reliable as you can get in a diesel. This engine seems to be very reliable and is used heavily overseas with expansion starting into the US.
I think it is the INF 150 or something like that.

I was wondering if anybody is familiar with the engine.

Also, Bill had mentioned that this engine might fit in the 462 which would give people an option over the turbo 4.

I'm guessing it is a less expensive engine but I can't say for sure.

I guess Bill has made his decision. This is now posted on his site:

"N/C Iveco NEF 150, 123HP six cylinder, continuous duty, Tier II, no turbo;

$15,000 Optional Lugger L1064A 115HP, continuous duty, Tier II, four cylinder, turbo, using John Deere 4045 block; "

I'm a little confused as to the increase of $15k over the included engine to get the Lugger, but I don't know the cost of either one.

First thing that comes to mind is why the move away from the 4045 Deere as the standard engine?

I am sure that I will have a lot more thoughts on this subject and am off to learn more about the Iveco.

What about the cost of repair and availability of parts?

Has anyone explored the Mercedes Diesel that they are using in the Sprinter Vans? A 5 Cylinder Turbo Diesel. I hear they are upping the HP this year and going with a 6 cylinder V Block as opposed to the I-Block. I blocks seem to be easier to work on though since everything is accessible.

My take on the engine situation is that they are all good motors...but the important thing is parts availability and people to work on your motor when needed....so look at where you intend to use your boat...ask around....and then do not cut corners...I think we have one of the last John Deers in our boat and I am happy about that as they are all over the marine scene.....Nothing wrong with IVECO they have generics all over the place but as the engine is the heart of the boat and relivant with resale....always consider the saleability....I would spend the extra and go with the LUGGER....they too are all over the marine scene..go ceap on the coffee...not the engine.
