John,

I am builiding a 48 wood duck. Am laying up the keel right now. Have been trying to get a thread going to solicit other duck home builders but for reasons I can't figure out, am unable to create a new thread. So, if there are other home builders (especially wood) who have actually made some saw dust, reveal yourself.

Wendell,

Thanks for the heads up. I had tried to get in to the site several times having seen the link on George's DD site but (and perhaps I am not as I-literate as the average bear) I spent way too much time trying to sign on to the YAHOO group unsuccessfully. I finally threw in the towell on that site. I have a couple of good people I am in touch with and looking for a few more kindred souls to whine to.

I check into the Wooden boat forum too. Sometimes that's helpful, sometimes not. I need to check back into your site again soon, I haven't been there in a while. How's your 38 coming??

In a word, S L O W L Y. I work full time as an auto mechanic. That doesn't leave me much time for boat building. I manage to put 20 hours a week into Helge (two hours after work and 10 on the weekends). I do love the project, though.

To keep my limited console space uncluttered, I've come up with the idea of placing my engine gauges, auto pilot, forward sounder, throttle, and bow thruster controls on my helm chair. You can see a quick mock-up movie I made of it here. It's 1.5 MB so dial-up will take a bit.

At first glance it looks like it might be awkward to work the throttle and bow thruster when standing up, but it's not (when standing the controls would be slightly behind you at your hips).

The reservoir inside the seat will be for the John Deere. With two feet of rise, I won't need a pressurized system. I dont' think John Deere allows this with their newer engines. I like the idea of a "non pressurized" system because it will never go into a vacuum during its cool down cycle (and possibly suck in sea water from a pin hole keel cooler leak). I'll wrap the reservoir with sound deadening material to cut down on noise transmission and heat.

What do you think?

Greg - do you have any pictures?

What kind of work enviroment are you in? Quick and easy tarp cover, or full-blown shop?

I'm dreaming of building a 44 *someday*, but gotta find somewhere to do it first...

ps. Please post some pictures!

Mel,

My wife and kids have nick named the project "pile-o-wood" cause pretty much that's where I am at. There are about 7 or 8 keel pieces of which there are two big ones (9" x 12" X 35' and another that's 30') I have those two trimmed up and am laminating and shaping the other pieces now. I am building out in my front yard (I guess that makes me a "Front Yard Boat Builder". A nice boat shed for this sized project is too prohibitive so I build when I can out doors. I do have some keel making pictures but not sure how to attach them. Weather here has not been so great so far.

I wish you would use a more generic way of posting. The message I get when I tried to see it was "the quicktime viewer needed is not on this server" or something......

Sorry, Ben. I'm on a Mac and I used QuickTime 7 to compress the movie. QuickTime 7 is a free download here.

If you don't want QuickTime 7 on your computer, you can see some screen shots of the helm chair in entry #15 on Helge's site.

I'm sure more regular participation from Seahorse would help a lot. In the end many of the questions and comments here need Seahorse input to make the site really productive. There just aren't enough boats on the water for owners to pick up the slack.

I know this is hard for Seahorse as they are very busy and there are only a couple of people that can answer many of the questions raised here.

I think for this site to survive and be productive they will need to contribute at a much higher level than is happening now.

However, either way they still build a nice boat so getting that part right really is job one.

I agree that participation from Seahorse would be great! Perhaps a prinicpal could check the forum once a day and respond when appropriate?

Hi, Ben. I made a PC friendly version of the Helm Chair movie (I hope). The link is in entry #15. Unfortunately the compression quality is not that great.

Does it work for you?

Wendell,

Beam me up Scotty!!. Wow. Do you fly this thing too? That chair is too cool and I thought I knew which console fired the photon torpedoes. It worked for me and as you know, I am a PC dummy.

Shoot, I should be out shaping my keel timbers, not drooling over your chair.

Bye.

I agree but the funny part is when you order a boat you become very buisy managing everything...and there is a lot going on between owners of SeaHorse Ducks....so maybe it should become a bit more fun ....more human and personal ...as well as serious....Margie is always refereing to the "Secret Duckers Society" when we owners have things going on...I know Bill is very buisy and to be Quite honest was surprised to see him have the time to get some things up.....But that is Bill...He is a happy Chap and enjoys life...loves his DUCKS...and Stella seams to keep control of the lot....I held back a bit as I did not want to get people thinking there was something wrong with the standard boat...there is not....because ours is so different.

The other reason was that I have a few people around the place waiting to see what we are up to next ...as we have done a few crazy things in the past ...and I new this boat would take a while to build...so now it is about maybe 6 months off commissioning....maybe?? it is fun to be on the forum....In Australia all they know is I'm having a new boat built in China...a few people will be surprised when they see us turn up in a DUCK...

So as time goes by I am sure this place will grow...as the popularity of the Ducks is doing.

Happy Ducking....

I've just recently returned from a two week visit with Bill and Stella at the yard. Our boat, 382-3 is now having the interior roughed in and I'm extremely pleased. This morning I posted a group of photos in the photo section. I have another group to post, (my story isn't finished), but the site won't let me. Does anybody know why? Maybe each member is only allowed one photos post?? I'll try again.

As Don McIntyre mentioned in his post, the Seahorse Duck Owners fraternity is an enthusiastic and growing group. I had met the Nagles and Johnsons previously and Dave Nagel was kind enough to meet me at the airport in HK upon my arrival and get me started in the right direction. Randal and Ruth Johnson were in the room next to me at the wonderful "Golden Princess" hotel across the river from the yard and we spent a lot of time together as their beautify green hulled boat "Dora Mac" nears completion. Bye the way, I probably spent about three hours sitting on (in) Randal's Flying Bridge and will definitely have one on 382-3 (as yet unnamed). We will also have the mast in Bill's "balanced rig" position forward and I think this will work out well with the FB.
In September I spent 3 weeks with Bill on Martin Bordelon's 462-1, "Mandarin", cruising in the Pacific NW and then helping out at the Seattle Boat Show. During our cruise and later helping at the Seattle show, and later at the Solomons, MD Trawler Fest, my appreciation of the Diesel Duck as George Buehler designed it and Bill and Stella build it continued to grow. Like ALL the other owners I have met, I AM SO EXCITED!

Bye the way, to pass my alone time at the hotel, I borrowed Ruth and Randal's copy of Don and Margie McIntyre's wonderful book, "Two Below Zero" which detail with beautiful photography, the year they spent in their little "hut" in Antartic. I highly recommend it to all (the ISBN # is 1862760187). It gives a hint I think of the plans they have for their new and impressive 462-6 "ICE".

Great pictures, Dean! Again, we need as much participation as possible for this board to be meaningful for all of us.

Ok...so where are all the Women in this site....I always consult Margie on everything about our DUCK and she always laughs about the "Secret Duckers Society" that exists between "owners" at the Seahorse yard...so she she just asked?? since most "owners" consist of a Male and Female.....considering Margie used to throw up at the thought of being on the water when she was yonger and know will cruise anywhere anytime Diving/Fishing/exploring and yes Flying! ...she is halfway through her Flying boat licence.....(Polaris Flying Inflatable Boat carried on 462 Duck)...She is happy to "Chat" to the other half of the owners about "Girl" things????

Nice article on Ben Gray's "Idlewild" aluminum 55 footer and his journeys in the February "Soundings" magazine. By the way this publication has really grown. I like their articles a lot.

Hi everybody,
I feel a little intimidated writing to such an exteemed group of navigators. First of all I want to respond as a woman living on a Duck in the Northeast. Well, the winter has been mild so far but when we have had cold weather we have had an opportunity to test all our heating systems. So far we have been warm and dry and think of the days when we will be out of the Northeast. Where we are living all the boats are wrapped in plastic. We are not wrapped in anything. The only adjustment we made was to buy a small dehumidifer which works great to keep the mosture down. We also covered our hatches in clear plastic which seem to act as storm windows. The boat is well insulated and with our Webasto furnace, we are warmer than we were in our Victorian home.
We sold our home (of 30 years) last year and have been living on the Peking since June. I have been very surprised how well I have adjusted. We have spent most of our sailing time in Long Island Sound but we have ventured to the Chesapeake. To me it is live driving an SUV without the gas milage. I can't wait until April when we will go out again. We both still work so at night we sit around and read charts and plan and dream our next trips. We are living the adventure, not full time yet but getting closer.

Jerie,
It was very cool to hear from you. Intimidated? Believe me, unlike most of this group, you are already floating on your duck. I suspect most of us are in envy. I applaud and congratulate you on your leap from shore to sea. Keep us posted on your experiences.
